Hey Guys!!
So yesterday was my peer mentoring session for University :)
I woke up at 6:45am, hopped in the car and drove 1.5 hours to meet my mentor and fellow mentor buddies. To be honest, I was a little anxious and worried about finding my way round the university. However with the help of the trusty app "Lost on Campus ", I was able to locate the mentoring classroom and to my surprise I was the first there hehe:)
The lady who organised the peer mentoring session introduced herself to the group and gave us the breakdown of first year university life. She was very sweet and made everyone feel really comfortable! There were several mentoring groups and we were required to introduce ourselves to our smaller group and present in a creative way to the class, "Why we chose this particularly university"? It was our turn to be called up to the front of the room, with our comic strip in hand, we explained to the rest of the group our reasons for choosing this particularly university. There were a range of answers with some students moving interstate or overseas to attend the university due to its reputation. However my reasoning was quite different to the other students, as most of my fellow high school friends decided to attend a university closer to home or were attending a different uni than I was. I thought it was a chance to have a new start, meet new people and see where this university would take me both personally and academically :)
Meeting such a variety of people who were all older than I was and from different backgrounds was really exciting; and I'm looking forward to learning more about them and the university. My mentor was extremely helpful and blessed us with her knowledge as a second year student, advising us where to find the best coffee on campus with the cute baristas hahaha to the places to buy discounted uni textbooks. It was a great chance to meet other students who are in the same faculty and shared common interests. Having gone to today's session I feel a little more relaxed attending my first class on Monday, as I will know a few faces around campus and have a mentor who is there to be a support and guide, as I begin this new part of my life.
I began walking back to the car with my mum to return home, only to be stopped by one of the members of the student society asking if I wanted to join. She explained that by joining I would be informed on the latest news and events around campus, be given a student diary and food discounts. As soon as she mentioned the word food, I was like "Sign me up" hahaha :p That was my day and I encourage anyone who is about to commence tertiary education to sign up for peer mentoring and the different clubs available, as it gives you a chance to meet new people and to try new things (exactly what this blog is about ).
Have a wonderful day and I'll let you know how my first day of uni goes :)
"With a little courage, we'll get there"!
